Sydney vs Lisbon vs Chiang Mai: A Real Cost-of-Living Comparison for FIRE Seekers

General information only. Not financial or tax advice. Costs are estimates and may vary.

Most discussions about the cost of living abroad start with one big number: you could live in Southeast Asia for $2,000 a month. And then they stop there.

The real question isn’t whether you can live somewhere cheaply. It’s what your money actually buys — housing quality, food, healthcare, lifestyle, social infrastructure — the full cost of living picture, not just the headline rent number.

This comparison uses the same $5,000 AUD/month budget (roughly $3,200–$3,500 USD / £2,500–£2,700 GBP / $4,300–$4,600 CAD / $5,400–$5,500 NZD) across three cities, broken down across every major spending category that makes up your real cost of living.

Accommodation

Sydney — $2,800–$3,500: One-bedroom in inner suburb (Newtown, Surry Hills). $2,800 is the floor; $3,200–$3,500 realistic for anything decent.

Lisbon — $1,400–$2,000: One-bedroom in Príncipe Real or Arroios. €800–€1,100/month. You can go lower (€600–€700) in outer suburbs.

Chiang Mai — $500–$900: Furnished one-bed with aircon, WiFi, gym. Nimman, Santitham, Old City — multiple options in this range.

Verdict: Sydney eats 56–70% of budget on accommodation. Lisbon: 28–40%. Chiang Mai: 10–18% — broadly consistent with Numbeo’s cost of living index for each city.
